If you have ever visited New Orleans you know that enjoying at least 1 Po’ Boy while you’re there. What’s better than fried shrimp with a creamy sauce on soft French bread? This is my Imperfectly Perfect version that anyone can serve up to the family any day of the week!!
PREP TIME: 10-15 minutes
COOK TIME: 15 minutes
SERVINGS: 4
ingredients
- 3/4 cup Grape Seed Oil*
- 3/4 cup Milk**
- 1/4 cup Hot Sauce
- 1 egg
- 1 lb Shrimp (deveined)
- 1/2 cup Flour
- 1/2 cup Cornmeal
- 1/2 TSP Baking Powder
- 1/2 TSP of each: Paprika, Garlic Powder, and Old Bay
- 1/4 TSP of each: Oregano, Thyme, and Onion Powder
- Salt and Pepper to taste
- Sandwich Rolls***
- Shredded Lettuce
- Sliced Tomatoes
- Pickles
- Remoulade****
*Grape Seed Oil is a healthier frying Oil. It had a mild flavor and a high tolerance for heat. Vegetable, Peanut, Canola Oil, etc is fine if that’s what you have on hand.
**Obviously Cow milk is normal to use here, but I always use Unsweetened Almond Milk for everything.
***Traditionally French Bread is used, but any sandwich rolls will be great.
****Remoulade is a mayonnaise based sauce that is tangy with a bit of spice. It is the traditional sauce for so many New Orleans recipes. However, plain Mayo can be used and will save you a few steps.
instructions
- Heat Oil in pot over high heat until it reaches 375 degrees. (If you don’t have a cooking thermometer, you can tell when the Oil is ready by placing the handle of a Wooden Spoon into the Oil. If the spoon makes the Oil bubble, it’s ready.)
- Whisk Milk, Hot Sauce, and egg in a small bowl. Add Shrimp and let sit for about 4 minutes.
- Mix Flour, Cornmeal, Baking Powder, Spices, and Salt and Pepper in another bowl.
- Roll Shrimp in the Flour mixture until fully coated.
- Fry Shrimp in batches for 2-3 minutes. Remove onto Paper Towels to absorb dripping Oil.
- Layer each Sandwich with the Shrimp, then the Remoulade, Tomatoes, Lettuce, and Pickles.
- Serve with your favorite Potato Chips or fries and ENJOY.
