Buttermilk Fried Cauliflower

PUBLISHED: 2/18/2020

Has living a Plant-based lifestyle got you missing indulgences like fried chicken?? Well here is a recipe to satisfy that old craving! With a little extra prep time you can serve up a crispy on the outside, soft on the inside meal that will stand up to the original. This Perfectly Imperfect recipe has simple ingredients and is easy to follow. Serve along side my Vegan Mashed Potatoes and your favorite sides, as a sandwich, or in a salad!!

PREP TIME: 25-30 minutes

COOK TIME: 20 minutes

SERVINGS: 4

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Plant-based Milk
  • 1-2 TBSP Lemon Juice*
  • 1 Egg**
  • 1 head Cauliflower (chopped into 1 in florets)
  • 1 cup Flour
  • 1 TSP each: Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Paprika
  • 1/2 TSP each: Oregano, Thyme
  • 1/4 TSP each: Cayenne Pepper, Tumeric***
  • Salt and Pepper
  • 1 bottle Grapeseed Oil****

*Apple Cider Vinegar or Rice Wine Vinegar can be used here as well.

**The Egg can be completely omitted to keep this dish Vegan.

***Tumeric gives the perfect coloring to the dish. It is optional but adds a nice touch 🙂

****Grapeseed Oil is an inexpensive and healthier alternative to Vegetable or Canola Oils. Peanut or other frying oils can be used if that’s what you have on hand.

instructions

  1. Stir Lemon juice into your Milk. Let sit 5 minutes to thicken and become “Buttermilk.”
  2. Whisk in Egg (if using) with Buttermilk in a large bowl. Coat Cauliflower in mixture and let sit about 15 minutes.
  3. In another large bowl mix Flour, Spices, Salt and Pepper together. Add 2-3 TBSP of Buttermilk to the Flour mixture and mix.
  4. Pour enough Oil into a medium pot so that it is about 1 inch deep. Heat over high until it reaches frying temperature (350-375 degrees.) Place the handle of a wooden spoon into the Oil – if it bubbles around the spoon it’s hot enough!
  5. Dredge each piece of Cauliflower in the Flour mixture so that it is completely covered, then place in the hot Oil in batches (I did 4). Fry each batch about 5 minutes or until nicely browned and crispy.
  6. Remove with a strainer and place them on a Paper Towel to absorb the extra Oil.
  7. Season with some extra Salt and Pepper to taste.
  8. Serve how ever you like and ENJOY!!

I did Sandwiches with Mayonnaise, Pickles, and Frank’s Red Hot. Delish!!!!
