Chinese Steamed Wontons

published 8/2/2020

Whenever my family gets Chinese food, these are always on the table. There are different varieties (i.e. Dumplings, Potstickers, or Gyoza) depending on the type of Asian restaurant, but every one is super tasty! You can find Wonton wrappers in the International aisle of most grocery stores, which is what I used, but you can make your own dough and turn these “Wontons” into Dumplings, etc. My Perfectly Imperfect recipe uses ground Turkey, however you can make them with ground Chicken, the traditional Pork or even just vegetables!!

PREP TIME: 20-30 minutes*

COOK TIME: 8 minutes/batch

SERVINGS: makes about 35-40 Wontons

*I recommend steaming the first batch while you make the next batch of Wontons, and so on. This way you will save time on prep while waiting for each batch to be cooked.

ingredients

  • 1 lb ground Turkey or Pork**
  • 2 heads Chinese Cabbage (chopped)***
  • 1 TSP fresh Ginger (grated)
  • 2 Garlic Cloves (grated)
  • 2-3 Scallions (thinly sliced)
  • 2 TBSP Soy Sauce
  • 1 TBSP Sesame Oil
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 package Wonton Wrappers

DIPPING SAUCE

  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
  • 2 TSP Rice Wine Vinegar
  • 1 TBSP Sesame Oil

OR

  • Soy, Sweet Soy, or Dark Soy Sauce (I prefer just the simple flavor of Dark Soy to use as a dipping sauce.)

GARNISHES (optional)

  • Sesame Seeds or Everything Bagel Seasoning
  • Fried/Sliced Scallions
  • Chili Oil

*Most recipes call for ground Pork with high fat content, but I used 92% lean Turkey for a healthier meal and they were delicious! If you want to make these vegetarian, add grated Carrots, Celery, Peppers, etc. I recommend adding all the ingredients into a food processor and pulsing until smooth so the filling is more like a paste and will be easy to fill the Wontons.

***Chinese Cabbage is much smaller and softer than Savoy or Green Cabbages, but any variety can be used. With a firm Cabbage, make sure to grate them and not shred to prevent any tough/thick pieces tearing through the Wonton wrappers. Use between 1/3 and 1/2 of a larger Cabbage, depending on your preference.

instructions

  1. Mix all filling ingredients in a large bowl until fulling combined. I recommend using your hands!
  2. Wet the edges of each Wrapper by dipping your fingers in water and rubbing them over the outside edge. Spoon about 1 TBSP amount of the filling onto the center of each Wrapper. Seal them by pinching all the opposite corners together. Place the finished Wontons on Parchment paper to prevent them from sticking to any surface.
  3. Use any kind of Steamer you have. (I have a small pot with a metal colander and lid, but Rice or Bamboo Steamers are ideal to cook more than a few at a time.) Place the Wontons and Parchment in the steamer. Steam for about 8 minutes. Repeat until all are cooked.
  4. Garnish and serve with your choice of dipping sauce. ENJOY!!
