Caramelized Onion Toast

PUBLISHED 3/6/2020

When it comes to Caramelized Onions I will eat them on just about everything, and this Perfectly Imperfect recipe has an incredible Umami flavor that will have you licking the plate! I served them over toasted Naan bread with Prosciutto and Aged Cheddar, and toasted Wheat bread with Goat Cheese and Micro Greens, but the delicious variations are really endless!!

PREP TIME: 5 minutes

COOK TIME: 40-45 minutes

SERVINGS: 4

ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Butter*
  • 3 large Onions (quartered or sliced)
  • 2 TBSP Apple Cider or Rice Wine Vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/2 TSP Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/2 TBSP Oyster Sauce (optional)**
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

*I use Country Crock’s Plant-based Butter made with Avocado Oil. It is delicious alternative to regular butter for anyone who need to eat healthier or dairy-free.

**Oyster Sauce is one of my favorite ingredients to cook with. It can be found in the Asian aisles in most grocery stores and adds an incredible depth of flavor. Leave it out if you prefer, but it really takes this dish to the next level. (FYI: it does not make the food taste like Oysters!)

instructions

  1. In a large pan, melt the Butter over medium heat. Add the Onions, season with Salt and Pepper, and saute for about 7-10 minutes, or until they become soft and begin to brown.
  2. Pour in the Vinegar and cook another 1-2 minutes.
  3. Pour in Water, Worcestershire Sauce, and Oyster Sauce. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20 minutes.
  4. Remove the lid and continue to cook until all the liquid has absorbed (about 10 minutes.)
  5. Adjust Seasoning to taste and ENJOY!!

Serve over your favorite toasted bread with any type of cured meats, aged/salty cheeses, apple/pear/peach slices, savory jams, etc.
