If you are from, or have ever traveled to Pittsburgh, then you know all about our “signature” sandwich. It has everything….meat, cheese, coleslaw, and yes, french fries! This Perfectly Imperfect recipe is a healthier version of the beloved sandwich, so you won’t feel as guilty when you open your mouth as wide as it goes to devour all the deliciousness!!
PREP TIME: 10-15 minutes
COOK TIME: 35 minutes
SERVINGS: 4 sandwiches
ingredients
French Fries
- 6 large Red Skin Potatoes (sliced into fries)*
- 2 TBSP Avocado Oil**
- Salt and Pepper to taste
Coleslaw
- 1/2 head Cabbage (shredded)
- 1/4 cup Apple Cider or Rice Wine Vinegar
- 2 TBSP Avocado Oil**
- 1-2 TBSP Honey or Agave***
- Salt and Pepper to taste
Sandwich
- crusty Italian Bread (cut into thick slices)
- 2 Tomatoes (sliced)
- 1 lb Roasted Turkey (sliced or shaved)****
- Cheddar Cheese (sliced)*****
*I like to use Red Skins because the skins can be eaten and I hate peeling potatoes. If you prefer a different potato variety feel free to use those, but make sure to peel them first. Use a Mandoline Slicer to make the best fry cuts if you have one. If not, here is a video to see how to cut them the best way.
**I always use Avocado Oil as a healthier alternative to Canola or Vegetable Oil, but use whatever you have on hand.
***Agave is sweeter than Honey or Sugar so don’t over do it. Also, you can use regular granulated Sugar if you prefer.
****I like to buy a whole roasted Turkey Breast from Aldi and slice it myself (It’s only $5 and it’s delicious!) Any deli meat can be used, as well as thinly sliced steak, kielbasi, or sausage. And the true Pittsburgh way is to even add a Fried Egg!
*****I prefer to use aged Cheddar on my sandwiches but Provolone, American, etc will all be just as tasty.
instructions
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Toss the Fries in the Oil, Salt and Pepper until evenly coated. Cover a baking sheet with Parchment Paper and lay the Fries in a single layer on top. Bake for 30 minutes, flip them over, and bake another 5-10 minutes until they are as crispy as you like.
- While the Fries are baking make the Slaw. Mix the Cabbage, Vinegar, Oil, and Agave in a large bowl. Season with Salt and Pepper and keep refrigerated until ready to use.
- Assemble the Sandwich: start with the Turkey, then Cheese, Coleslaw, Fries, and Tomatoes. Finish with a few dashed of Tabasco or Frank’s Red Hot, if you like, and ENJOY!!

Looks like a healthier version of the other one from Pittsburgh. This would be great way to use leftovers from Thanksgiving.
