Family Room Design and Decor

After moving into this home about a year ago, I have been slowly working on each room, but mainly our Family Room. We spend most of our time in here so I wanted to make it cozy and welcoming, yet super stylish! I am sharing my decor concepts and how I pieced the room together in this post, but you can find links to others that have detailed directions on how to create and/or makeover other projects from this room as well. I hope you find inspiration from my perfectly imperfect techniques and the feeling of pride after accomplishing it all on your own!!

The Original Family Room

Redesigned Family Room

Fireplace and Mantle

The backdrop of this design is Peel and Stick Flooring, Molding, and some basic Wood Boards and Corbels. This specific decor is what I have up from January until September (I love to decorate for Fall/Thanksgiving and Christmas the Mantle is one of my favorite things to update for those seasons). I chose shades of green as an accent color to compliment the green undertones in the color of the walls. The gold seemed to be an obvious choice to unify the white, grays, and greens. Selecting pieces of various heights, textures, and styles to put together is a great way to create a feeling of purposeful, yet spontaneous design. Other than the old books which were my great-grandmother’s, I found everything at my favorite place to shop – HomeGoods!

Coffee Table

I wanted something simple and classically beautiful to accent our coffee table. Candles, books and dried flowers are standard choices to top a farmhouse style tray and make any table “pop”. I love the industrial style of the wine bottle candelabra with the white-washed wood look of the opposing candle holders and soft two-toned throw. The addition of color-complimenting books and a green glass vase of dried ferns and flowers brought the whole look together better than I expected! I found everything at HomeGoods, Joann Fabrics, And Michaels, as well as added antique books I already had.

Industrial Piping

I have used this same look all over our house. There is no overhead lighting in any of the rooms so this is the perfect way to get wall lighting without needing an electrician to mount them and connect a bunch of wires. Pendant lighting with “Edison” bulbs seems to be everywhere you go. It creates a warm glow and really adds a unique aesthetic to every room. Not only can you hang pendant lighting from the pipes, but anything you can think of…shelves, picture frames, baskets, lanterns, etc! All you need are some hooks that are large enough to fit over or around the circumference of the pipe.

Window Bench and Storage

This is another look and design I have done throughout our house. It is such an easy way to get a window seat and any other kind of bench seating you desire. By using a bookcase as the bench’s foundation, this piece becomes a functional storage unit as well. This design piece does not have to be used as a window seat, it can be used as a base with upright bookshelves on either side to create an entirely different look along a wall.
